United Sprinklers – Sprinkler Winterization Near Me

Sprinkler Winterization & Blowouts in Grosse Pointe, MI

I’ve winterized sprinklers across the Grosse Pointes for 30+ years—lakefront homes along Lake Shore (Jefferson), classic lots near Mack & Kercheval, and older systems by Cadieux, Vernier, and Moross. With mixed copper/brass at the house and newer poly/PVC laterals common here, I keep it safe and effective: 50–60 PSI with high CFM, short, controlled passes per zone, and I leave the drain plug off or partially threaded so any weeping shutoff drains out instead of back into the system.

How I Winterize (My Method)

  1. Shut off & inspect — supply, backflow, drains/low points, zone order.
  2. Hook up safely — connect downstream of backflow; run 50–60 PSI with high CFM.
  3. Short passes per zone — farthest first; ~60–120 seconds to fine mist; pause between zones.
  4. Backflow & drains — purge test cocks; leave drain plug off or partially threaded so a weeping shutoff drains out.
  5. Controller — City-water can stay ON. Pump/lake/well: pump-start disabled so the pump can’t run dry.
  6. Report — I leave a paper Winterizing Report + text notes.
Important: Winterization is not a full inspection. Air doesn’t reveal every issue the way water does, so some problems only show in spring under pressure.

FAQs — Grosse Pointe

Do I have to be home?

No—if your inside water is shut off and I can access the controller, you don’t have to be home.

Controller on or off after winterizing?

For city-water, it can stay ON. After shutoff/blowout there’s no pressure, and a scheduled opening can help gravity-drain. For pump/lake/well, I disable pump-start.

What PSI/CFM do you use?

50–60 PSI with high CFM. Volume clears lines safely—no need to exceed that range.

Why leave the drain plug loose?

If the main shutoff weeps, water drains out through the plug instead of back into the system. If you notice continuous dripping after 24–72 hours, call me; otherwise I’ll see you in spring.
