What PSI/CFM do you use to winterize sprinklers?

I run 50–60 PSI with high CFM. Volume moves the water; there’s no need to exceed that range.

Do I need to turn the controller off?

For city-water systems, it doesn’t matter—you can leave the controller ON. After shutoff and blowout there’s no pressure, and scheduled zone opens can even help gravity-drain. For pump/lake/well systems, I disable pump-start so the pump can’t run dry.

What should I do with the drain plug after a blowout?

I leave it off or only partially threaded so if the main shut-off is leaking, water drains out instead of back into the system. Check again in 24–72 hours—if it’s still dripping, the main shut-off needs replacement.

My Winterizing Method

1) Shut off & inspect

Close supply, check backflow, locate drains & verify zones.

2) Safe hookup

Connect downstream of backflow; run 50–60 PSI with high CFM.

3) Zone-by-zone

~60–120 seconds until mist only, pausing between zones.

4) Drains & backflow

Purge test cocks, open drains, leave plug off/part-threaded.

5) Controller

City-water can stay ON; pump/lake/well pump-start disabled.

6) Wrap-up

Paper Winterizing Report left at your door + text notes.

Important: Winterization is not a full inspection. Water reveals leaks more reliably than air — so I may not catch every issue during blowout. Spring start-up is when we fully test and repair.
