Why is the drain plug left off or partially threaded?

If the main shut-off is weeping, water drains through the plug rather than back into the system. Check again in 24–72 hours.

How I Winterize

Shut off & inspect — supply/backflow, drains/low points, zone order.
Hook up safely — connect downstream of the backflow and run 50–60 PSI with high CFM.
Zone passes — farthest first, 60–120 seconds to fine mist; pause between zones.
Backflow & drains — purge test cocks; open manual drains; leave the drain plug off or partially threaded.
Controller — City-water can stay ON. Pump/Well: pump-start disabled.
Winterizing Report — paper report + text notes; re-check the drain area in 24–72 hours.
